Understanding Libraries with qualitative techniques-Using UX to understand and improve your library’s web environment. [TG3/Qualitative]
Practical workshop with Dr Donna Lanclos
Via Zoom
Wednesday 14th May and Wednesday 28th May, 2-4pm
As our Library’s web and digital presence has become critical for our users, understanding how they use and exploit our online presence is key. This is a new session from CPD25. This event will be delivered by anthropologist Dr Donna Lanclos on methods that can be used to better understand our users’ habits and techniques and make improvements to our online systems when possible.
This event will be held over two afternoons and will equip you with skills to learn some practical techniques. Over the break you will practice on your own and then come back and learn how to use what you have observed, and what other workshop participants have learned, to meaningful effect.
This session will be practical, and you will be allocated a technique to try outside of the session, and we will be asking some participants to share their work and reflections in the second session in this collaborative safe environment. In addition, you will be asked to identify a potential project for your own web environment and bring this to the second session.
Work outside the session:
You will be allocated one of 3 techniques and will practice this technique in between the two sessions – you will need to find a volunteer to help with the testing–ideally someone unfamiliar with the library website/resources you are using, and you should document what you have learned, what was challenging etc. and then be willing to share at the next session.
Outcomes:
- Participants will gain an understanding of a range of techniques for online UX projects.
- Participants will gain a deeper practice with one technique as a part of their homework.
- Participants will be able to apply their understanding of UX techniques to a particular situation in their place of work and can start planning a project applying specific techniques to their situation.

Donna Lanclos
I am an anthropologist and a folklorist and have been unapologetic about those two things for quite a while, now. I found myself working in academic libraries starting in 2009, and since then have been thinking, writing, and talking a lot about the nature of information, digital and physical places, and higher education generally. I see my work as relevant not just to libraries or universities, but to conversations about how we as a society make sure that people have opportunities to learn how to think critically, to practice those skills, and to find their voices. I work with a lot of different people. In addition to research and writing, I conduct workshops, facilitate discussions, give talks, and participate in panel discussions on a range of topics that I find interesting.
