Having taken the plunge to implement RFID systems over the last two decades, RFID has moved on and libraries are now looking at how they can use this technology in a smarter way.

Join Mick Fortune as he talks about the future of RFID technology, and other speakers developing library use of, and working with RFID. You will also have the chance to share your experiences and thoughts as part of the plenary session at the end of the afternoon.

The Future of RFID Technology in the Library

1425-1455 – Ian Gifford, University of Manchester

University of Manchester have been developing an app for android devices which allows library users to self-issue books via a standard smartphone/tablet. It relies on the Near Field Communications (NFC) technology to process decoding the barcode, authenticate the user, remotely issuing the book and disabling the tag security so a user can ‘check-out’ the book.
