This is the first of 10 workshops that make up our cpd25 Aspects programme.

Reflective practice is the application of in-depth, focused attention to our experience, leading to the development of insight informed by critical or questioning attention to our values, principles, and assumptions.

This workshop introduces key concepts, techniques, and practical tools for developing reflective practice and reflexivity for library and information work. The focus will be specifically on how to reflect – the things we actually need to do to develop professional effectiveness when approaching new challenges, in analysing skills gaps and learning needs towards personal growth and development.

Designed for both new and established staff, the workshop will introduce core concepts and techniques in critical reflective practice and reflexivity, with signposts towards deeper theory and concepts to facilitate ongoing self-study.

Reflection is essential for CILIP Chartership and this workshop will support those undertaking Chartership as well as being particularly useful for supervisors, managers, and “leaders” at all levels wanting to develop professional effectiveness and expand their repertoire beyond their preferred ways of thinking and responding.

Speaker: Andrew Preater, Head of Library Information Systems at Imperial College London, is a practitioner with a strategic view of library management and professional development who has used techniques of critical reflective practice in strengthening and developing teams.

Programme

The workshop runs for two hours including a 30 minute break. The session will be split equally between classroom-style and individual and small group learning and practical work.

Learning outcomes for practical work include:

– Expressing and analysing an experience using a reflective journaling approach

– Appraising examples from delegates’ work experience using the methods (or lenses) of critically reflective practice

– Delegates assessing their own assumptions and principles from different perspectives

Venue: Hardy Room, London Mathematical Society, 57-58 Russell Square, London.

Cost: £45.00 members and £68.00 for other institutions.

Cancellations less than one week before the event will be charged a 50% cancellation fee. In the event of a ‘no-show’ on the day, the full fee will be charged.
