Twitter: @cpd25_M25 #cpd25
This event will take a broad look at innovative practice in engaging and supporting researchers across a variety of areas. Presentations will explore using library collections to promote research, support researchers and inspire and underpin public engagement initiatives, assisting researchers with practical tips and methods for organising their professional online identity using social media, and supporting scholarly communication.
Programme
09.45 – 10.00 Arrival and refreshment break
10.00 – 10.10 Welcome and introduction
10.10 – 10.50 Engaging Research
Nick Barratt, Associate Director: Collections and Engagement, Senate House Library, University of London
The presentation will explore several ways in which Senate House Library is opening up and developing its collections to promote research and support researchers, as well as providing a platform for showcasing research outputs via public engagement programmes. It will feature case studies from recent and planned engagement seasons such as ‘Shakespeare: Metamorphosis’, ‘Radical Voices’ and Reformation’ alongside new initiatives such as collection-focused research open days and community outreach work.
10.50 – 11.10 Refreshment break
11.10 – 11.50 Mind Your Socials
Allan Parsons, Academic Liaison Librarian, University of Westminster
While official online professional identities on a university website may seem more stable than the apparent precariousness of social media, official identities are either ‘on’ or ‘off’ and do not permit the development of a coherent identity over time, only a series of disconnected ‘nows’. Since one cannot afford to disappear with no indication of where one is reappearing in the contemporary period, i.e. one must be always ‘on’, social media become essential for cohering one’s identity while permitting professional development through fostering different aspects of one’s identity. Practical ways of organising one’s professional online identity are outlined and discussed.
11.50 – 12.30 Pushing at an open door?
June Hedges, Head of Liaison & Support Services, University College London
The session will provide an overview of UCL’s activities to engage researchers in the evolving Open Science landscape; beginning with our well-established support for the scholarly communications agenda, and more recent developments in research data support and bibliometics.
