Are you interested in qualifying as a professional librarian? This event brings together a range of speakers to inspire you to choose a career in the library and information world. We’ll give you an insight into the process of applying for and experiences of “Library School”, as well as look at your first steps in your career.
At lunch time, there’s a course fair with opportunities to meet representatives from LIS courses. It’s a great networking opportunity with peers and other new professionals, and there will be plenty of opportunities to get answers to your burning questions about the whole process. It will be of particular interest to Graduate Trainees and anyone else who would like to become a librarian or information professional.

Morning session:
The Information Profession – Challenges and Opportunities: Stephen Pinfield, Programme Coordinator for MA Librarianship, Sheffield iSchool
This presentation will consider challenges and opportunities for library and information services in today’s world. Looking at the latest research and good practice, it will focus on what those challenges and opportunities mean for the roles of information professionals within various organisations and the skills they must have. Some of the implications of these issues for selecting library and information science programmes will be highlighted
There’s Never Been A Better Time To Take The MA LIS: Anne Welsh, Programme Director for the MA Library and Information Studies, UCL
With the rise in fees across all Masters’ courses, it can be difficult to decide if postgraduate study is the right choice for you. This presentation takes a look at the evolution of library education in the UK, and concludes that with the underpinning of Cilip’s Professional Knowledge and Skills Base and the availability of high-tech modules at library schools across the country, although the economic cost may be more than a few years ago, the opportunities for learning within the vocational Masters have never been higher than they are now, in the 21st century.

The speakers will talk about how they see LIS developing as a field in the coming years.

Afternoon session:
Two recently qualified professionals will talk about their experiences after qualification:
Rosie Higman (University of Reading) ‘Applying to LIS courses: finding your way, full-time, and future-proofing’.
Kim Coles (Royal Holloway) ‘Applying to study Library and Information Science: a distance learner’s perspective’.
Rosie and Kim will be joined by Nick Balmforth (UEL), Oksana Viytovych (Kingston), Charlotte Middleton (UCL) and Nigel Buckley (Kingston) to form a panel of current and recent library school students, talking about their experiences and taking questions
Timings are approximate as an important aspect of this event is to allow delegates plenty of time to talk to speakers and course representatives – and each other! However the event will end no later than 16:15 with a final round up of the day and an opportunity for further questions.
