The Road Less Travelled – Looking Beyond Traditional Library Qualifications

Traditionally, aspiring professional librarians would complete a Masters course, and once qualified, would progress to chartership. Further career development was possible through attending courses and conferences. Nowadays, that isn’t the end of a librarian’s career development. Many librarians are looking beyond library school; either building on their library qualifications with further educational and professional opportunities, or coming into librarianship from different angles entirely.

At this event, we have a range of speakers with different experiences of taking ‘the road less travelled’.

Elizabeth Charles (Assistant Director of Library Services, Birkbeck, University of London) will discuss her experiences of obtaining a CMALT qualification from the Association for Learning Technology and how this had helped her in her role.

Ella Mitchell (Academic Services Manager, UEL) has undertaken a distance learning postgraduate qualification in Blended and Online Education at Edinburgh Napier University and will examine how this benefited her career.

David Morgan (Metadata, Discovery and Analytics Co-ordinator, Royal Holloway, University of London) will explain why project management skills are increasingly important for libraries and librarians, describe his recent postgraduate research in this area and inform how you can use these skills in your role.

Finally, organisers Amy Rippon (Academic Engagement Librarian, University of Roehampton) and Kevin Wilson (Academic Liaison and Collection Development Manager, LSE) will discuss their recent experiences of Erasmus+ staff weeks abroad and how it gave them a greater insight into libraries and universities more widely.

This event will suit librarians at all levels who are looking for new opportunities to develop themselves. You might already be qualified and looking for that next step up. You might be new to a role and wanting to develop the necessary skills, or you might have a new area of librarianship in mind for your next role. You might be responsible for staff development in your library and want to know which opportunities are out there for your staff. There will also be opportunities to reflect on the talks given and to think about your next career move.
