Copyright Support in Higher Education: A Tale in Two Parts [Ref. TG2/CopyTale]

The afternoon will include two panel discussions exploring copyright issues in relation to supporting both teaching and research.
The first part of the afternoon will focus on teaching support and copyright.
Chaired by Chris Morrison (University of Kent), he will be joined by Irene Barranco Garcia (University of Greenwich), Claire Kidwell (Trinity Laban Conservatoire) and Kate Vasili (University of Middlesex).
This panel will discuss:
- Interpretation of illustration for instruction and quotation exceptions
- Lecture recording and use of YouTube
- Sourcing legitimate materials for use in teaching, including use of the CLA Licence
- The reality of finding and using open-licensed content in practice
The second part of the afternoon will focus on supporting research and the associated copyright issues. Chaired by Jane Secker (City, University of London), she will be joined by Stephen Penton (City, University of London), Philippa Hatch, (Imperial College London) and Monique Ritchie, (Brunel University).
This panel will discuss:
- Dealing with images and third party copyright in theses and other publications
- Copyright education and PhD students
- Copyright, scholarly communications and publishing choices
- Data and open data – using other people’s and sharing your own data openly
Expect a lively afternoon with plenty of time for questions. We will finish up by considering some of the overlaps, and the challenges and opportunities of copyright education in higher education.
